Thomas,
That was absolutely “EFFEN” INCREDIBLE man! You are one kick-a** teacher of techie stuff.
I particularly liked the “News Bulletin” style delivery and you are good in front of the camera – very credible. Just watch the hands a little bit and use them a little bit less as it can be somewhat distracting. Watch the way that the big newsreaders do it on the TV news bulletins for some idea on frequency and execution.
The fact that you chose my blogsite – “I’m talking to you!” Hey, you talkin’ ta me? – meant a lot to me. Even though it still looks like a bloody base-version Volkswagon in comparison to so many other sites. I have spruced it up a bit from the old Lada-Niva it was last week. You will see I have added some pix and my super-duper Time in Motion ACTION Planner links and graphix.
Anyway, back to your video…
I loved the content, the way that you panned in and out of Station WIDLAS (a bit more on that name in a moment – actually a LOT more), the segmentation, the little “grab bites.” It all WORKS for me Tommy Gun.
Now, you referenced a quote in the video about… “You will be the same person next year, in five, 10 or 20 years as you are today except for the books you read and the people you meet.” I agree. The author of that quote is a man who I have met several times and spoken with. He has even autographed a couple of his books for me. He is the inimitable Charlie “TREMENDOUS” Jones. And he IS tremendous – a dynamite speaker. And Tommy you are well on your way too, my friend.
Now, I mentioned above that I wanted to come back to your name. I have an idea for you that will make station WIDLAS more identifiable. First, some background for those who “came in late…”
When I first came across to Tom’s site I did so as a correction. You see, I had Tom’s site entered in my blogeroo at “WILDAS” NOT “WIDLAS.” You can see the OBVIOUS reason for that. Unfortunately, it is so easy to do. I wondered if anyone else had done the same and I did a quick blogroll check and found that others had “read”, incorrectly as I had, the two conjunctive words “wild as” in unison. The WILDAS version takes everyone through to a foreign site.
My initial reaction was… Jeez, Thomas Skavhellen has done to himself what I quite often do to MYself. He was too clever with the word association. And I was concerned for you, Tom, coz you sure had one fine SUPERIOR site here with very few comments. That was when I recognised the word switcheroo that everyone was doing and I contacted you about it. Remember? And I will predict that this is STILL happening Tom – robbing you of so MANY visitors. So, here is my idea for you… actually my mind is in overdrive on the possibilities here coz I know you are a clever cookie and will be able to pull this off if you see my imagination through your eyes (hope you can)…
In your sub-title above, “What I Didn’t Learn At School” (ie “WIDLAS” – which is SO clever it is TOO clever) I would add “Blog Station WIDLAS” and then under that “What I Didn’t Learn At School” with the word “Didn’t” bolded and in RED. That will draw the eye and LOCK the “station” name into the minds of the readers – which is what you want.
Also, the graphics in the header, while pleasing to the eye, have ZILCH to do with your “station.” I don’t get it. People walking over a hill? Huh?
Now, Tommy, I hope you are taking this all the right way in the manner that I am offering this (coz you have helped me) so here is what I would ALSO do…
I would THEME the radio/news station and have a news station style building with an antenna and dish etc on it with you talking into a mike over there on the right like a DJ type and the effect of your words arcing out across the sky like lightning.
That is what I would do and that would synchronise your incredibly clever WIDLAS name with what it is all about. Most people are familiar with radio station “WIIFM” – what’s in it for me – but let’s get news station “WIDLAS” right up there coz Tommy… you are a GUN… and this site has the capacity to be a major learning environment like that other site Mr Smarty-Pants himself… Mark html Austin.
You two blokes are really delivering BIG-TIME in the techie area. You are both on the Gazz-Man’s elite GOLD list of BIG achievers. And I only promote those who are worthy. I ain’t no communist or socialist. I am a Goddam CAPITALIST!
Rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat… way to go Tommy Gun.

Jeez… look at that! A friggin’ sermon from the Gazz-man – LOL!

Buddy, you know I said it many times before, but this first video of yours is AWSOME!
As Gary said above here, that quote was from Charlie Jones – too bad he’s passed away.
Keep up the good work – we’ll talk over the holidays. :)

Hi Marius,
I didn’t know that the big fella had passed away. I knew he wasn’t in the best of health. That makes me sad. He taught me a lot about attitude.

Great 1st Episode Thomas!
Many tips in under 5 minutes!
Looking forward to more.
Thanks for stopping by to see me during these busy times.
I have emailed my Student List worksheet in to you 3 versions.
The one I actually work with is Excel2007.
Keep an eye out for it.
Season’s Greetings!

Wow!! Thomas that video was great! I can’t believe that was the first one you made! There was a lot of good content on there also. Keep them coming! You rock! :-)
Beth McDuffie
Hi Thomas,
Great first episode. Very informative in such a short time slot.
I am wondering why your sound sync was off? Your voice was playing before your mouth moved. This probably the most important improvement you need to make as sound quality is more then 50% of the viewing experience.
Keep it up man. I look forward to the next episode.
Cheers.
Ethan
Gary: Wow.. thanks for the great comment. When someone spend so much time one me to succeed I know I will give so much more back Gary. That’s for sure.
First, thanks for addressing the quote of Charlie Jones. He was a great man as we just learned to know ha has past away. Still there is a lot of truth in his words and the way I have been able to catch up with the reading and educating myself is with audio books. So hopefully other find this helpful too.
I also thank you for helping me with the branding problem. We both agree that it’s a clever name and I know myself for working on flipping websites that a 6 letter domain with content and meaning will be worth a lot of money as a brand if only worked in right. But I see I’m probably losing some traffic since the domain can be hard to read and I need to put in some extra effort in fixing that. I’ll see if I can get some of those changes done in my header, to make it more meaningful. I think it can be done big time.
I’m wondering if I should take the video part out of my main blog on run it on widlas.tv. Then blog about the episodes and link them over to a new site. Not sure if this would be a good or a bad idea at the moment. Thoughts anyone?
I’m still free to change my show title to something else then Widlas TV also.
Absolutely doing something about the branding. So thanks for pointing it out again and giving valuable tips and pointing me in the right direction.
Marius: Thanks a bunch man. I’m glad to receive comments from you no matter if I’ve heard it before. You also cleared up some things about Charlie Jones that we didn’t know. So thanks for stopping by.
Clayton: Thanks! I like to keep my episodes short and filled with value. I will probably use more time on showing the illustrations. I feel that it went a bit to fast in the first episode. Also thanks for the mail with the student lists. Hopefully I’ll get a site up very soon with the whole list.
Beth: Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. Hopefully you get your own videos out in not that long. :)
Ethan: Sweet! Means a lot coming from one of the up and coming big Internet video celebrities.
The sound was a bit out of sync in the middle of the video. I didn’t noticed that before after I had started the editing and got stuff together. I was also traveling back to my home town for the Holidays, where I still are now. So I didn’t have time to record those two clips again. So I tried my best to cover those parts with a lot of illustrations :) Hopefully next one will me fully in sync.
I need some tips on a better cam and how I should record sound. At the moment it’s my laptop mic that records the sound and a webcam that records the video. I think I want to invest in something better in January and February
Hi Thomas
Thanks for this video – I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the way you had the links and information under the video. That really helped me.
I did the SEO custom structure but when I tried to click into my full blog post I kept getting the following message:
Not Found
Sorry, you are looking for something that isn’t here.
I took the text out again (I had copied and pasted it from your info) and it all worked fine. Any idea why this should be?
I want to get the best SEO I can so any comments would be useful!
Otherwise I like the idea behind this – sometimes I feel like I have so much to learn and am such a long way behind many others, but I’m sure my time will come as long as I keep on going!
Anyway well done. I’m sure that 2009 is going to be an exciting and profitable year for us all.
Hilary
http://www.hilarydickinson.com
@Hilary, yes. You are 100% correct. Your time will come. You see, the TRAP that everyone is falling into here is COMPARISON of self with others. That’s a death trap.
@Tommy, I’m so glad I can help you with ideas. You see, that is why we all need MENTORS and ADVISORS. Other people can see in half-a-nanosecond what can be done to make everything so much better. You have a fabulous concept here but you need to BRAND it to make it oh-so-obvious. Not everyone is as clever as you and what is INSIDE your brain needs to be transferred into a sequence that others can follow – easily. And that goes for everyone, me included. I outsmart myself all the time.
Regarding the video site – that would be something that I would be developing “on the side” – if you get my drift. Go and see how David Smith has set his blog and video site up. He has over 100 videos now. But even if he had 1,000 or even 10,000 – it wouldn’t matter. The www is so damn HUGE that there is space for everyone. That is something that most people just don’t “GET.” They think – oh, such-and-such has already done that. But the www is like a galaxy. Your website is like a star up in the sky.
So, Tommy, I will be watching your progress here. If you want an opinion then feel free to come to the Gazz-Man and just ask. I always give honest answers. Sometimes people don’t wanna hear that but the smart ones always take constructive comments on board and GROW!
BTW… come over and take a look at why I am calling myself Goose-Boy on the “Build a List” thread that I threw up this morning. It’s had over 20 comments in just a few hours.

Hi Thomas,
Well done on your first video, you are a very talented and brave guy for showing yourself to the rest of the internet world!
Since I’m sure you are going to improve on your videos and make them better in the future I’d like to recommend a site you might find of interest.
http://www.getyourvideoonline.com
I agree with Ethan Bloch that sound is as important as the visuals in any video in order for it to inspire – which is what you’re doing. Also, Lighting is an important factor in video making so try and get the lighting right on your next vid.
Apart from that I think your animation is fantastic and I agree with Gazz – man’s idea about creating a radio/news themed station which is a great angle for attracting traffic to your site.
regards
Guy
Hi Thomas
I came on over to check out your site and seo stuff. Great video and animation. It really sets you apart and gets noticed I am sure. I am going to try the permalink thing and see how it works. Thanks for the tip.

I enjoyed your video. Thanks for the tip on SEO. Watch the hand movements as a suggestion. I can use all the help I can get as I am a complete newbie. I have added you to the blog roll and will look you up on Twitter. I am also on facebook.

Hilary Dickinson: I’m sorry for not getting to you before now Hilary. It’s not like me to keep people waiting.
I can’t understand your error you got. It have worked with so many other blogs that have seen the video. If you try one more time and still don’t get it to work. Please send me an email and I’ll try to give you an one on one help through Skype or MSN so that we can fix up those small things that makes the big difference.
Guy: Thanks for the link man. I signed up and watched all the videos. Got a lot of great tips on what kind of equipment I needed and how to setup an episode. I hope I can implement as many of the tips I’ve learned from those videos in my next episode. Thanks again Guy!
Thomas Northrop: Thanks Thomas. I hope this can be my way for sharing what I know. Hope you get that Permalink to work. Shouldn’t be any problems if you do it right. But let me know if it doesn’t work.
PeggyThanks Peggy! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. And I’ll be watching my hands in the next episode :) Just let me know if you have any questions Peggy. i will be more then happy to point you in the right direction!
Hi Thomas
Doing the New Year rounds,
I added your link to my blogroll
You are right Thomas: buying traffic makes about as much sense as a turkey booking a holiday for January
People need to want to come to your site rather than being brought there.
And yes we should fish from all sides of the boat, including the front and the back.
My experience so far tells me that from my visitors that an average of 2.25% of my visitors opt in.
And out of the opt ins; 1 in 38 buys the one time offer
Looking forward to a great 2009 with Alex and the rest of you gang
Keep well & prosper
Jim & Des
Hi Thomas
Thanks for your reply. I’ve tried again and I still get the same error, so something my computer doesn’t like I think.
Email me if you can help me thanks!
Hilary
Hello Thomas,
You’ve got a beautiful start going – wow. Sure it needs a little polish and shine – but that will come – especially with help from people like Gary.
Thank you for visiting my blog. I’ll get you posted asap – and thank you for the constructive comments. I’ve been testing response to each blog and it seems everyone favors the Carrington style., so I’ll probably be phasing the other one out shortly.
If I could ship you the snow I would. I mean sure this makes for a great work out (not that I wanted one, even though I can use it), but guess what? You got it – more snow today (5 to 10 cm), tomorrow (another 5 to 10 cm) and then could it be …. sunshine?
Hope you have a wonderful New Year!
Angela
hey thomas
thanks for dropping by, i see your doing very well and you have a nice and pretty
alexa ranking too. Ive got the firefox add on which displays the pr and alexa on my page which is cool, just incase u aint got in but as your a techy u prob have lol so i will wind my neck in!!
would be interested to know where your posting your banners to get traffic?
i wouldnt go as far to say that im a twitter expert, but to be honest i dont really know how much the average person knows about twitter, ive just picked up lots of great tips and tricks to help funnel people to my blog.
As soon as i get passed my 2000 followers cap i will be able to drive an unlimited amount of traffic to my blog then from twitter because we need 2000 followers dont we b4 we can start following more people. Im currently on about 1500 so not far to go
I take it u know about twitter karma?? thats how you can edit your profile so that u can stop following people that are not following you back and then add more people etc
Oh and the ebay thingy, ive tried a little technique out last week and its working well im just in the middle of tweaking my ads for maximum opt ins playing around with text and all that but i will be making a video on this soon
I know what you mean about some traffic not being targeted and my twitter traffic isnt lazer targeted either however it doesnt matter because im sending them to my blog and not a sales page and the great thing is the more traffic u can get to your blog weather its lazer targeted or not this will increase our exposure and then our traffic will increase even more because google will then see our blog as some authority. That being said to get max opt ins obviously it will help to have more targeted traffic but as my blog is only 10 days old it doesnt make much diff at the moment im just sending as much traffic to it as i can for now.
How is your analytics coming along?? how many unique visitors have u had so far??
That old gary simpson sounds confident that hes in for a chance for the $$$$$$ i guess we will have to wait and see what happens, good work though gary
News Flash:****************************************
If i can reach my 2000 cap very soon i will be able to send a few hundred people a day to my blog and i then might be in for a chance for the $$$$ as i have a few tricks up my sleeve (nothing black hat of course its all fine) but i think unless i have 200 followers by tomoz i dont think i will have much chance
anyway watch this space
its all good fun
this is my last sentance so dont worry lol
speak soon
paul
Hi Paul,
Go and read Parkesy’s “About Me” page. I want HIM to win it. If, on the very remote chance that I did win it – which I won’t coz I’m not even competing (I know what the challenge is for and I don’t need that) – I would demand that Alex gave it to Parkesy. That’s how strongly I feel about it.
But thanks for your comment. And what’s this “old” sh*t. I’ll give you a run for your money, young fella – LOL!
I like to come here and see what the Tommy Gun is doing.
Regards to all…

Hi Thomas –
I love the format, thats the way to go! Look forward to seeing much more!

Hilary Dickinson: I’ve just sent you a mail. Let’s figure this problem out and get your blog on the right track.
Angela: Thanks for the kind words! Yes I’m glad to have connected with Gary and many other students. We help each other that’s how it works.
I preferred the Carrington style for sure. Any how it’s important that you concentrate on only one blog. Having to blogs about the same topic can be very confusing for everybody :) Good luck with all the snow and Happy New Year to you too!
Paul: Thanks for a great comment Paul. I’ve just posted my own Getting traffic post now. And as you can see I have a different approacher on the Twitter thing. But I will take a look at your Twitter software. I think it can make me more productive.
I was way to late on installing my Analytic on this blog. I have it on many other sites but for some reason I didn’t get it in here in time. So it has only collected a couple of 100 visits. But so far for this month I got over 6000 hits from my various traffic methods. Not all of them very targeted and my list haven’t gotten any bigger so it doesn’t count in my opinion.
Good luck in the competition Paul, may the best win :)
And I’m looking forward to your new videos.
JerryThanks a lot, and welcome back!
